Ramblings of Zain...

Just a little update because I havent posted for a while.

Life

Life is flying along for me. As many of you know I am in full swing into Anaesthetic training here in Australia, and have NASTY nasty exams coming up in March. Yes March. Most people say its about 1000 hours worth of study to pass them... which if you do the math (I am sure you already have) thats 3 hrs a day for nearly a year!

Needless to say this is where MOST of my spare time goes. It will all be worth it in the end... and I love this line of work. Happy to finally find something I think I would love doing for the rest of my life.

Way too much personal info... *hehe* the internet is scary afterall.

BOINC Synergy

Things are trunding along just fine. While I cant do as MANY updates with all the study, I am still visiting daily, keeping the forum running (and spam free with the great help of Forum Mods) fixing small bugs as they appear (like the Einsten history bug, SETI History bug, small signature bug, a few other little ones).

The team continues to show great moral fibre... with a wonderfuly active forum that answers issues for every project with old school members and new members alike. No flame wars, good conversations about everything BOINC to world peace. I am so proud of the team.

And the team continues to grow. 4200 members have now signed up here at the site... nearly 1000 in the forum. The teams have been slowing in their growing rate... with generally a few members picked up every week into BOINC Synergy. Many people think BOINC Synergy is a project!!!!... and I have to point out were a team, and that if you dont join at each project your name wont appear in our team lists!

The Future

Work is underway to develop a new looking site, with new and better member and team functions... and then hopefully a spate of new stats, features and things which we all love.

Development is slow... and I am waiting on a few important factors. One is I have recently just moved and will be moving interstate in July. Once the connection is set up, a few pieces of software have been organised I will get a team of people up and working on it. It will be slow going at first (never run a project like this across the world with \"strangers\") but hopefully it will work out. We have a development server to test things on, and will be an exciting time.

Keep crunching hard, posting in the forum... and spreading the BOINC Synergy love.

SETI.USA was formed to consolidate people in the USA onto a single team with the goal of becoming the number 1 team in the world. The United States has nearly THREE times as many users and nearly FIVE times more credit than any other country. However, as there are so many people in different USA teams and many without any team affiliation, other counties appear to be doing better.

SETI.USA has been in existence for just a little over a year and a half and we have already become the most productive team in BOINC and currently hold the #5 position in the world for total credit. We are the only team to ever reach a RAC of 800,000 for combined projects and currently have a goal of 850,000 by Thanksgiving. We are well on our way to accomplishing our goal but we need your help. The USA has always been known for rising up and overcoming challenges like this.

It's been a while since the last news. Everything is running pretty good, and we're very satisfied. Currently there is a friendly exciting competition going on between Boinc Australia and all french speaking persons gathered in l'Alliance Francophone. Who will win is an interesting question, the French speaking guys have assembled an entire army, but the Australians are tough! Or will a third team arise and claim victory? Further more, today I rewrote part of the stats daemon, I hope it will be implemented tomorrow: stats can be updated more frequently and it contains a few bug fixes.

The Aussie Assault on ABC@Home is coming to an end and it has been a fantastic experience for all involved.

l'Alliance Francophone ran up nearly three million credits and us Aussies are just creeping up to the two million mark now.

At the end of the day, though, it's not just the credits - it's the enjoyment of competition, team spirit and understanding different nationalities/cultures.
The guys at AF now realise exactly what we try to achieve on these Aussie Assaults and have thanked us for showing them something extra that can be gained from BOINCing.

The head honcho on the project - Hendrik - deserves a special mention for keeping everything together while two teams of looneys went at it hammer and tongs!

Both teams - BOINC@AUSTRALIA and l'Alliance Francophone gained a lot from the two weeks.

We have also gained ground in combined ranking - now placed 25th overall in team ranking.

We are now starting Aussie Assault 6 (AA6). After being runner up in the last few polls for the AA, Einstein has been chosen to be the project which will receive our concentrated attention for the next few weeks.

Bruce Allen who is the Forum moderator, Project administrator, Project developer and Project scientist for Einstein has agreed, after much persuasion from members of the Team, and instigated by Mike Mitchell, to crunch Einstein for our Team. He has started this already and his numbers are very impressive.

The Aussie Assaults are a regular team-building exercise we run here at BOINC@AUSTRALIA - the results are always impressive and we have great fun at the same time. In the last Assault (on ABC@Home) another team - l'Alliance Francophone - learnt how much fun these assaults can be and helped both BOINC@AUSTRALIA and the project itself achieve spectacular results.

The Guru Extra Effort Kruncherz Squad (GEEK Squad) consists of active members who have been on our team for at least 30 days and who wish to help out with our efforts to raise team rankings on various projects, or contribute to the discussions involved.

Access to the GEEK Squad private forum requires membership in the GEEK Squad usergroup. Interested members can send me a private message or email me if they wish to be added to this usergroup.

This public forum may be viewed by anyone, and most discussion regarding our efforts takes place here, as there really isn't anything terribly top secret about any of it... we keep the really boring stuff such as squabbling over which projects should be next on our list of targets in the private forum in order to avoid boring our visitors half to death.

For a very small team with very few active members, we've done remarkably well in a short period of time. But recruiting new members should become a priority in the coming months. To this end, our feeling is that people might be interested in joining a small team with several projects already high in the world rankings. I confess to a certain amount of pride in our accomplishments so far, but more active members is what will take the team higher in the rankings and recruiting will have to be a serious priority in the near future.

Both casual and serious crunchers are always welcome.. even a rather outdated PC can contribute to our cause. I still keep some old clunkers running 24/7 on BOINC projects in spite of the heat generated and electricity used for a few extra credits per day. So, don't ever believe that we won't take you seriously if all you can do is fire your old 500MHz Pentium II machine up on BOINC for half the day. There are several projects that run just fine on such a machine, and every credit counts.

We're more interested in the contributions we make to the sciences than we are in anything else, and the sense of community and family our small team can provide. Already in a big, top-ranked team? How about taking that old 700MHz Celeron box you've been using for a doorstop most of last year, and putting it to work for us? Make another account on our GEEK Squad current projects, join our team with that account, and help us out a little. I don't think your other team will ostracize you or take you off their Xmas card list.

For new visitors looking for a team, let me say that there are advantages to the big and small teams, alike. It's more important that you get involved than which team you choose. Just know that you're always welcome here, regardless of which team you choose to join.

Distributed Computing is a rather rewarding hobby that lets you do something good for humanity without really doing much work, or spending a bunch of money. Of course, some of us do that, too... building cruncher farms with many CPU's warming up the house in the winter (and killing us trying to keep it cool in the summer) but only the truly dedicated need to go to all that trouble. We're glad to get casual crunchers on the team, because every contribution counts and is appreciated.

The target is WCG - World Community Grid. This project actually crunches four separate causes:-
1) Fight Aids at home
2) Genome comparison
3) Human Proteome folding
4) Help cure Muscular Dystrophy

WCG is slightly different to the other BOINC projects. If you have any difficulty attaching, check the team forum.

Belgium, a small country with a great team: BOINC.BE

Today BOINC.BE entered the top 20 of all projects combined. A remarkable achievement for a team from a relatively small country like Belgium. With our recent average of over 600K/day we rank even higher, at position 16. This means that we can rise even further.

As a national team we only let 5 countries before us: the US, Germany, Canada, Australia and the Czech Republic. But we want to do better. We reach the vast majority of crunchers in the north of our country. We would like to launch a special appeal to our friends in the south to join our effort. This goal was achieved within 24 months of inception thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our dedicated membership. Team England has decided to take part in one of the regular competitions at WCG –
Christmas Race 2008



A list of the ‘runners’ can be found here –

The race runs from 1st December through to midnight on the 24th December.
All team members are invited to take part – the more the merrier!
The team has the opportunity to improve both UK and World rankings on this worthwhile project. All it needs is a small contribution from everyone in the team – perhaps one or two WCG WUs each day while continuing to crunch your own projects. There is a thread in the Team Forum where you can follow progress or find out how to ‘tweak’ your project settings.
The WUs can take up to 8 hrs and the time for validation, strangely enough, is quicker than SETI even though WCG WUs ask for a quorum of 10 or more!

BOINCstats team members may also participate in the extremely active members only sections of the forums which include hardware and software support, active chat about projects, new technology, crunching challenges, favorite projects, and even a bit of humor.
  

2008 was a period of tremendous growth for our team, and we are already continuing that trend strong into 2009. We are regular participants in the SIMAP scrambles each month, as well as the PrimeGrid challenge series.
