I am very new to FreeBSD, but I installed the Boinc Client port and attached to Leiden Classical successfully.
The server sent a message "platform i386-pc-freebsd not found", although there is one listed in Applications.
Do I need to recompile the port so that it sends a slightly different platform name to the server, or is it something that needs to be fixed at the server end?

I think so; this is the name of the executable we made: classical_5.56_i386-portbld-freebsd.exe so I guess you need to attach with the string 'i386-portbld-freebsd' as the application platform. It used to work though...

OK, for my second attempt I recompiled the boinc-client port with the following line in the Makefile

CONFIGURE_ARGS= --disable-server --with-boinc-platform=i386-portbld-freebsd

and the Leiden Classical server came back with the message

25-Mar-2011 12:12:47 [Leiden Classical] Message from server : No work sent
25-Mar-2011 12:12:47 [Leiden Classical] Message from server : (your platform is not supported by this project)

with no further explanation of what was wrong.
I have to admit that without further advice I don't know how to compile a boinc-client that requests an application with your file name.
When compiled from the default Makefile, the client requests an application i386-pc-freebsd, which doesn't match your file name.
I'm open to any suggestions?
I am using FreeBSD 8.2

H'mmm; this is the platform name I have in the DB 'i386-portbld-freebsd' and how the executables are named. Perhaps you can download the executable directly and see if it runs? http://boinc.gorlaeus.net/download/DownLoads/Standalone/
